Table tennis teams fail to medal

BARBADOS defeated St Lucia and Martinique but finished a disappointing fifth of eight teams on show when the team event at the 58th Caribbean Table Tennis Championships ended in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Monday.

The women’s team ended at the bottom of the four-team table without winning a set, but there was some consolation through the efforts of the men who won the play-off for seventh and eighth place against Martinique.

The men’s team lost all hope of being medal contenders after finishing third of four teams in group one. Their only victory came against St Lucia, following losses to the Dominican Republic and Guyana.

Barbados started badly against the St Lucians when Kristian Doughty lost in five games to Adrian Albert, but Tyrese Knight put the Bajans back on course by beating Omarie Ferdinand 10-12, 11-2, 12-10, 11-8. (PH)
