Uniform prices ‘too hot’

SOME PARENTS are complaining that school uniform prices are too hot.

A number of mothers interviewed by the MIDWEEK NATION said the annual costs to outfit school children for the new school year were going through the roof.

An unemployed mother of three, who requested anonymity, said that she could only afford to buy uniforms for two of her children.

“School uniforms are getting too expensive. I could only afford to buy three uniforms for my eight-year-old daughter and they cost me $70 each. Now for my six-year-old son a pants for him is $35 and the top is the same price and I could only afford three tops and bottoms for him too. My younger son, who is going to preschool, the price for clothes is the same. You could believe that?” she asked followed by a loud sigh.

“So you could imagine how much money I had to spend so far and I now buying underwear for them and the prices are $5 and up. What I try to do is get everything I can on sale and buy quality. For example Thani’s Shoe Shop and the Liberty Store had sales so buying shoes was not too bad. And when I buy school bags I look for the strong ones. I buy school bags every two years,” she explained.

Tricia Jones and her daughter Faith Jones were recently in Bridgetown as they shopped for socks and underwear at S.Y. Adam and Son on Hincks Street.

Tricia said she was unemployed and struggled to buy school uniforms for her son and daughter as well. She said the ready-made uniforms she bought for her daughter did not fit properly, but she purchased them nonetheless because the price to have the custom-made was much more expensive. (SB)
