SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETE Tyson Browne and the versatile Akela Jones shone brightly at a Night With The Stars at the Barbados Hilton on Saturday night.

They were named in an esteemed list of 25 Barbados sports icons, headed by National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers, at a lavish gala at which three other knights – Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Wesley Hall and Sir Austin Sealy – were among those saluted for their outstanding contribution to sport.

Olympic bronze medallists James Wedderburn and Obadele Thompson, 2009 World Championships gold medallist in the 110-metre hurdles Ryan Brathwaite and former world draughts champion Ronald “Suki” King were among those recognised by Government, under the direction of Minister of Sport Stephen Lashley, who delivered the welcome address.

Swimmer Leah Stancil (nee Martindale), who became the first black woman to reach the final of the 50 metres freestyle at the Olympic Games in 1996, many-times Woodbine champion jockey Patrick Husbands, perennial Sol Barbados Rally champion Roger Skeete and widely travelled windsurfer Brian Talma, who competed at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, were also named among the distinguished group.
