Update gun laws

BARBADOS’ GUN LAWS need updating to reflect greater punishment for possession and use of high-powered weapons.

St James Central Member of Parliament Kerrie Symmonds, who is also an attorney at law, called for the legislation to be updated to reflect the types of firearms on the streets.

According to the Opposition MP, the current Firearms Act treated all firearms in the same way, including rocket-propelled missiles and military grade assault weapons.

“I think that we have to look also not only at [the grade of weapon] but the legislation should contemplate first offence and second offences. My view is that a man carrying an AK-47 or rocket launcher does not commend himself to me as being the sort of fellow who needs to be given an opportunity for a second offence,” he said. (LK)
