IT MAY just be an indigenous sport but the king and queen of road tennis are now in prestigious company and happy to be regarded as sports icons.

Julian “Michael Jackson” White and Kim Holder, Barbados’ two most successful road tennis players, are still trying to come to grips with being chosen among the 25 national sports icons last Saturday night at the Barbados Hilton.

“It is an honour to see road tennis come to this stage and being mentioned at any awards ceremony. It is nice to see that we have been awarded for our contribution in the sport,” White told NATION SPORT after posing with his fellow honorees for a group photo.

“It is also good to see that road tennis is taking a next turn as a sport because we are accustomed adopting other people’s sports like basketball, football, cricket, but this is also a change as we are introducing road tennis to not only Caribbean islands but also to places like [United States of] America and England,” he said.
