TWO-TIME Olympic triple jump gold medallist Christian Taylor is in Barbados and he has a few words of advice for athletes.
“First and foremost keep God first. My faith is very strong and it’s something I also take a lot of pride in because I know none of this would really be possible, my transition with my leg, being a professional athlete and longevity, I am very grateful for all my blessings.
“Secondly it would be to have fun; no matter what you do whether its track and field, football, cricket, just have fun. Every day I go to training because I love what I do and I don’t take it for granted. And last but not least, sacrifice. Any dream you have, any goal you have you need to sacrifice,” he said.
Taylor was speaking to students of Christ Church Foundation School (CCFS) and the University of the West Indies Blackbirds club during a meet and mingle session at Bougainvillea Beach Resort in Maxwell, Christ Church yesterday.
Taylor also reminded the athletes to always be true to themselves.
“Last time I [was here] spoke about giving up Crop Over and giving up a lot of fun events that I truly cherished and enjoyed. But I said if I am going to be a professional I have to live like a professional and treat my body like one. Wearing these medals around my neck now, and feeling the weight, makes it all worth it,” he said beaming proudly.
Coach of CCFS Seibert Straughn, who was also present, described the experience as “something special” for his athletes.
“I think this is a very positive experience. For these athletes to meet an Olympian is something special, and actually to have a conversation with the Olympian is even better. Christian Taylor is to me a very well loved athlete on the circuit, and I am certain that the words of advice he gave them today [yesterday] will definitely go a long way for the upcoming season,” he said.
Taylor is here for a weeklong visit to both secondary and primary schools to deliver motivational and inspirational messages to students across the island. (RA)
