DR SONIA BROWNE has won the Barbados Labour Party nomination for St Philip North, becoming the first woman to get the party’s nod in the constituency.

In a highly contested three-way race, the first in the constituency since 1994, she secured 52 votes. Attorney David Bryan received 19, and Omar Smith, a farmer, got 20.

In her acceptance speech, the 44-year-old medical practitioner, who was nominated by former parliamentarian Rudolph “Cappy” Greenidge, said: “This is my victory but we all have won gold, silver and bronze.

“Hopefully, we will all be working together to get this constituency back in order. I am by no means a veteran to the political scene and I am hoping and I expect all of you, over the weeks to months, to help me.”

She will come up against the Democratic Labour Party’s Michael Lashley, Minister of Transport and Works. (WILLCOMM)
