THE BARBADOS METEOROLOGICAL Services is monitoring the progress of a strong tropical wave about 780 miles/ 1255 km to the east of Barbados. The system is moving towards the west-northwest at about 23 to 29 mph/37 to 47 km/h, with an accompanying area of low pressure centred along the wave axis near 9N 46W.
Environmental conditions are conducive for some gradual development over the next 24 to 36 hours, and a tropical depression could form by the time the system approaches Barbados, late tomorrow Tuesday into early Wednesday morning.
Regardless of development some moderate to heavy showers, periods of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected to spread across the island late Tuesday into Wednesday.
Rainfall accumulations of three to five inches (75 to 125 millimetres) are possible along the path of the system.
In addition, swells of four to five metres (12 to 15 feet) and winds gusting to storm force of greater than 39 miles per hour (63 km/h) are also likely.
Residents in Barbados should continue to monitor the progress of this system.
