Water Warriors in St Joseph

THE WATER WARRIORS have pledged to continue their march to provide water for residents in St Joseph and other affected parishes until their situation improves.

The group, led by deejay Stokely Murray of Starcom Network’s The Beat 104.1 FM, and calypsonian David Davis, made a trip on Sunday for the third weekend in a row to the affected areas after collecting water at Newton Industrial Park, Christ Church; Massy Stores  in Warrens, St Michael and Glacial Pure, Salters, St George.

Davis said they first started the water collection and distribution drive back in April for eight weeks, but had stopped after the outages improved, community water tanks were installed, and water tankers deployed more often.

They restarted since the conditions of the people from St Joseph and St John, in particular, again started to get critical.

Joycelyn Mullin of Airy Hill, St Joseph got two 5 litre bottles of water, here she gets a helping hand from one of the Weekend Water Warriors volunteers to take them to her home.

“We will keep it up until a change comes. We would like everyone in Barbados to come out and donate water,” Davis said.

He also noted that since they resumed and had Starcom Network come on board to publicise the effort, the donations had increased by 100 per cent.

Glacial Pure donated 32 cases of five-litre bottles of water to their exercise. Soca queen Allison Hinds and entertainment promoter Freddie Hill also joined the project.

The team made stops at Airy Hill, Sugar Hill and Chimborazo in St Joseph, as well as parts of St John.

Murray said they were focusing on households that had children and the elderly. He added that those which had amputees or the incapacitated were also being given priority.

One of the recipients was 100-year-old Gertrude Clarke. (LK)
