Community service ‘not a soft option’

THE COURTS ARE using community service as one way of speeding up the disposal of cases, and reducing the massive backlog.

And despite the success achieved from the involvement of businesses so far, a call has been made for two additional Government agencies to get on board – the Ministry of Transport and Works and Ministry of Education. More than 20 businesses have signed on the programme.

The issue of community service came to light during a “community service” day last month in the District “A” Traffic Court.

About 50 people converged in the Bridgetown court, presided over by Magistrate Graveney Bannister, to update the court on their experience after completing their assigned tasks. The last scheduled day saw more than 30 people in the courtroom. (TKS)
