HAMILTON– Forecasters are predicting that Tropical Storm Nicole will make a U-turn late Sunday and head for Bermuda as a resurgent hurricane.

Nicole, the 14th named storm of the Atlantic season, formed as a tropical storm last Tuesday south of here and meandered erratically while intensifying to a Category 2 hurricane with 105 miles per hour winds on Friday.

It then started to weaken as it drifted further south.

However, on Sunday, the Miami based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said the system was almost stationary, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, 560 miles south of the island.

The NHC said Nicole was expected to turn to the north soon and become a hurricane again on Monday and pass close to the island’s east on Thursday.

The Bermuda Weather Service said Matthew, a powerful hurricane that caused death and destruction on its rampage across the Caribbean and up the US east coast, is now a post-tropical cyclone but remained a potential threat to Bermuda.

Matthew is due to pass 200 miles to the island’s north on Monday.

Seas around Bermuda were forecast to become rough on Sunday night.

Tropical Storm Karl dumped around four inches of rain on Bermuda when it brushed the island late last month but it caused no serious damage.

Rainfall in Bermuda this year is 10 inches above normal. (CMC)
