Costly venture for boxing and judo

THE BOXING, weightlifting and judo associations will have to dig deep in their pockets to ensure that their respective sports make a successful undertaking of the 50th Anniversary Independence BOA Games slated for November 16 to December 11.

At a press conference at the BOA headquarters in Wildey yesterday, first vice-president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Barbados (ABAB), Richard Atwell, said it would cost his organisation about $220 000 to stage the Games.

Atwell said that the ABAB was no doubt looking forward to the event and would be delighted if any sponsors come on board for the event which will attract 18 countries and run from November 6 to 11.

So far 30 boxers are in training and according to Atwell, that number will be trimmed to about 25 for the tournament which will feature bouts in the Youth, Elite, Novice and Juniors divisions. (MK)
