THE NATIONAL UNION OF PUBLIC WORKERS (NUPW) has been urged not to worry or contemplate strike action over Government’s recent move to contract part of the national garbage collection to private waste haulers.

“The NUPW should not worry or strike since contracting out should increase private sector enterprise and employment, create a better environment and benefit the economy,” economist Professor Michael Howard told the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday.

“It also relieves part of the burden of truck maintenance on the Government and the cost of acquiring new vehicles,” said the retired senior lecturer at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Howard’s comments follow remarks by NUPW president Akanni McDowald that Government had “lost its way in relation to the SSA (Sanitation Service Authority)”. (TS)
