HOME SCHOOLING IS nothing “new or fancy” in Barbados.

In fact, Senator Harry Husbands, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education said it had actually been going on for a while.

He said too, that the number of people opting for home schooling had increased in recent years. Husbands said while many Rastafarian parents were using that option, “you simply do not just decide you ain’t sending school the children”.

Husbands, who delivered the Democratic Labour Party lunchtime lecture yesterday, said to home school was a simple process once several requirements and standards were met.

“We have simple things you have to do. You have to write the ministry and seek permission,” Husbands said while noting that a curriculum must be put in place, a timetable developed, and instruction given in a systematic way with well-kept records. (LK)
