THE EDUCATION SYSTEM cannot only be expected to prepare young people for the world of work, says Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.

If that were to happen, Barbados would be guilty of producing “one-sided citizens”.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the fifth International Conference of Higher Education at Hilton Barbados yesterday evening, Stuart said while he had heard and understood that view, he did not completely agree with it.

“I hear it said very often, and I respect it, that our education system should prepare our young people for the world of work . . . but we have somehow lost sight of the fact that man is not just created to work. But anytime an education system gets to a point where all it prepares people for is to work, then something is fundamentally wrong with society and society is going to pay a very, very heavy price for it. In fact, some of our societies are already paying a very big price for it,” the Prime Minister said. (RB)
