PRODUCERS OF PRE-MIXED CONCRETE in Barbados have accused the Arawak Cement Company of declaring war on them because they purchased cement from new entrant to the market, Rock Hard Cement.
But Arawak’s parent company, Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL), is denying they have started a war, instead pointing out they have taken a “defensive position” after being attacked, to safeguard their “hard-earned territory”.
It noted that “collateral damage” was always an unfortunate consequence of battle.
The fight that started last year when local businessman Mark Maloney formed Rock Hard Cement and imported a sizeable quantity of the product from Portugal in November, forcing Arawak to lower its price, reached a new high in recent weeks when Arawak imported at least four concrete trucks and a concrete production plant that is now being set up at its Checker Hall, St Lucy complex.
