NEW WARNINGS have been issued about counterfeit notes after a rural club said it was defrauded of $500 in items purchased with fake currency.
Sunrise Community Club, which operates the bar at the ongoing GAIA T20 cricket competition being played at Rices Playing Field in St Philip, was left holding five bogus $100 bills last Saturday, following the night’s sales.
The club’s president Trevor Blenman told the WEEKEND NATION that a potentially worse situation was avoided through the use of a counterfeit detector machine the following night.
“After we realised that we had the counterfeit notes, we borrowed a machine on Tuesday. A man then came up and tried to purchase some drinks with a $50 bill, but when we put it under the light, we realised that it was fake,” he said. (RB)
