TWO PEOPLE WERE recently weaned off of the heavily-used haemodialysis service thanks to successful kidney transplants at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

The surgeries were done through a collaboration between the QEH and British medical charity team, Transplant Links Community (TLC).

More patients with kidney failure are expected to be assisted through the partnership in the coming years.

During a press conference at the hospital today, QEH chief executive officer Dr Dexter James and nephrologist Dr Lisa Belle praised the partnership and stressed the burden it will take off of the island’s health-care system.  (TG)
