NUPW threat ‘absolute madness’

THE IMPASSE BETWEEN Government and the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) stands to threaten Barbados at a most critical time.

That’s the bleak assessment of Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) president Eddie Abed, regarding the NUPW-led industrial action and its effects on the country.

Over the last week, the NUPW directed its members among immigration and custom officers at ports of entry to slow down on the job, and on Friday asked general staff at the Grantley Adams International Airport to join in the industrial action, after rejecting a proposal by Government for the workers to form part of wage negotiations with the public sector.

The action is reported to have resulted in lengthy lines at the airport. (AD)
