AS BARBADOS celebrates Independence, Independent Senator Sir Henry Fraser is renewing his call for another three Barbadians to be named national heroes.
Clennell Wickham, T.T. Lewis and Sir Frank Worrell should all be National Heroes, Sir Henry said yesterday during debate in the Senate.
The Upper Chamber discussed and approved the Barbados Jubilee Honours Act, which will allow 50 Barbadians to be each presented with a special Barbados Jubilee Honour after being nominated by their fellow citizens.
Sir Henry, who served on previous National Heroes Advisory Committees, said Wickham, Lewis and Sir Frank “were people who suffered for the country, who were outstanding individuals, absolute icons of the Barbadian tradition, of Barbadian leadership and of Barbadian suffering, people who literally lost their life at a young age having contributed immensely to the glory that we have in Barbados”.
He said these individuals “helped Barbados to punch above their weight” and “who by their inspiration made a huge difference in Barbados”.
Reacting to the suggestion, Leader of Government Business, Senator Maxine McClean, said: “We . . . note the continuing call for additional national heroes but that I suppose will have to be taken up by those with the power to address that”. She added that the calls were “worthy”. (SC)
