A DAY BEFORE Barbados’ 50th anniversary Independence celebrations were set to climax, a weather system dropped over six inches of rain, causing islandwide flooding and forcing several of the planned pre-Independence festivities to be postponed.
In some areas the rainfall was so high it completely submerged vehicles, while the Barbados Fire Service was called into action in Woodbourne Park, St Philip, to save 13 people who were trapped in their homes due to the rising water levels.
It also caused schools to be closed early.
With the Garrison Savannah completely under water, the showpiece annual Independence Day Parade scheduled to take place there this morning was postponed until tomorrow, while the premier Reveal Of The 50th Anniversary Of Independence National Monument, which was originally scheduled for 7 o’clock last night, was shifted to the same time tonight.
