ON NOVEMBER 30, Barbadians at home and abroad paused to reflect on 50 years of Independence.

Many comments were left on the Nation Barbados’ Facebook page under the video Looking Back At 50 Years, which highlighted some of the top moments in the island’s history.

Set to the tune of John Roett’s 50th anniversary tribute song Our Home Barbados (Legends To Legacy), it took viewers on a sentimental journey, with some saying the video brought them to tears. Up to Saturday afternoon, it had garnered more than 118 000 views

David Stuart: I was on parade that night as a starry-eyed teenager. Fifty years later I will be on parade again as a wide-eyed senior citizen of beautiful Barbados.

Pedro Greaves: Happy 50th, Barbados. May God continue to bless this country and may we be thankful always for the blessings that have been poured out to us over the years.

Ghaneshwar Singh: Happy Independence, Barbados. I’m truly blessed to be part of this great nation, a little rock in the sea that stands out to the world. Its citizens are the most friendly and hospitable people in the world. May God continue to pour out His blessings on Bim.

Sara Patel-Motara: I remember that night my parents took my siblings and me to see the raising of the Flag as a kid. I remember it like it was yesterday and the rain poured that day as well. It was so muddy, but the memories stayed with us.

Marcia Mullin: Happy birthday, Barbados. There is nowhere in the world I’d rather be. We have to build on our greatness and try to minimise our negative. We can achieve anything if we recognise that this is a nation that is second to none. Proud to be Bajan.

Denys Springer: Happy Independence Day, my homeland Barbados. As a teenager I experienced the joy of this great land gaining its Independence so it’s with great joy I return for this wonderful occasion; couldn’t miss it.

Juliette Alleyne: Happy Independence, Barbados. I am proud of my country. May the Lord continue to shower us with His blessing and grant us all mercies.

Caren Williams: To those who have passed on, we remember you for where you have put this tiny rock today. For those who are still here, we remind you of how far we have come. And to the people of Barbados, we may be small but our hearts are big! Happy Independence, Barbados; God bless Bim on Independence Day.

Margaret Small: Happy birthday, Barbados, my island home. Sorry I couldn’t be there in body but I am in spirit. I just want to wish all my friends and families a blessed, wonderful Independence Day.

Vicky Springer: Happy 50th, Barbados – the blessed little rock in the sea with friendly people and great hospitality. I am proud to be Bajan.

Ralph Hall: Happy birthday, Barbados, wish I was there to celebrate

Mara Thompson: Happy Independence, Barbados (A wonderful display).
