SOME OWNERS and managers of holiday properties along the South Coast were still in a quandary yesterday about what they should tell their guests regarding the closure of the popular Worthing Beach.
The stretch of Christ Church beach which is dotted with small hotels and several holiday apartment complexes, was closed three days ago after an alarm was raised about a suspected leak from the South Coast Sewerage Project into the sea with the opening of the sluice gate to the Graeme Hall Swamp.
However, a release from the Ministry of Tourism Monday night said the decision to open the sluice gate was made “in order to lower the water level in the Graeme Hall Swamp and reduce infiltration into the sewer system”.
“Out of an abundance of caution,” it added, “a decision was taken by the Ministry of Health and the National Conservation Commission to temporarily close Worthing Beach which is adjacent to the sluice gate.” (GC)
