SUGAR MAY NO LONGER be king, but Independent Senator Alwin Adams says abandoning the industry might not be a good thing for Barbados.
To do so, he told the Upper Chamber yesterday, “we might in fact be writing our death warrant”.
Adams was voicing his support for the resolution to approve the guarantee by the Minister of Finance of the payment of the principal and interest in respect of the issuance of a bond of up to $73 million arranged by ANSA Merchant Bank Ltd for providing working capital support to the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC), and to provide funding to the company’s expenses and costs for the Barbados Cane Industry Support Project.
Adams argued that agriculture (the non-sugar sector) was closely aligned to the sugar industry and usually when sugar did well, so too did agriculture on a whole. (SDB Media)
