Skipper out to boost squad

THE NEW MAN on the job is already thinking ahead.

Barbados’ newly appointed captain Damien Applewhaite is looking to the future of the Davis Cup team, saying he wants to get the younger tennis players up to scratch in case they are needed for action.

Applewhaite made the comments ahead of the squad’s Americas Zone Group II first-round tie in February against hosts Paraguay.

“Our No.1 job, of course, is to [return to] Group I, so we will be looking for new players to come into the team that can give a boost to the squad,” he said.

“So my first task is to get a smooth transition from captain to captain and meet with the potentials for the team.
