GOVERNMENT IS TOSSING another $15 million into the pot to tackle the epidemic of potholes that has taken over the nation’s roads.
Highly-placed sources told the DAILY NATION yesterday that the Freundel Stuart Government had determined that it had to respond to the complaints of motorists and, as a result, had raised from $5 million to $20 million, the money it would put into an emergency road rehabilitation programme.
While 29 roads have been identified for “immediate intervention” because of their poor state, another 86 will be tackled under a “mill pave” programme that will involve the removal of the top layer and strengthening of the foundation where necessary, before a new asphalt surface is installed.
Though he would only confirm that significant progress had been made in putting a plan in place for an urgent response to the situation, Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley said the intention was to carry out significant work, even during the Christmas holidays. (RRM)
