THE NATIONAL UNION OF PUBLIC WORKERS (NUPW) and the Freundel Stuart Government are again on a collision course.

Highly-placed sources have confirmed that the union’s top brass was due to meet to decide how it would respond to a decision by Government to confirm former union boss Walter Maloney as its representative on the Severance Payment Tribunal.

On December 8 the union’s general secretary Roslyn Smith received official correspondence from permanent secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development stating that Maloney would continue to sit on the tribunal.

“I am directed to inform you that the minister has advised that [the tribunal] will continue to work as appointed by the Governor General of Barbados,” the correspondence, a copy of which was obtained by the DAILY NATION, said. (RRM)
