BICO awarded $11.2m

LOCAL ICE CREAM PRODUCER BICO Ltd has been awarded a multimillion-dollar judgment in the Supreme Court arising out of a 2009 fire which destroyed its production line, forcing it to shift the making of ice cream to Trinidad and Suriname.

Following the fire on August 18, BICO had sued Qual-Tech Services, the company that was servicing its boilers at the time the fire broke out, for over $14 million in damages.

BICO had alleged that Qual-Tech, in repairing its boilers, had been negligent in carrying out welding works and that that was the cause of the conflagration. The fire was a severe one, with the Barbados Fire Service on the scene battling the blaze for two days.
