PLEASE ALLOW ME to correct the erroneous doctrine on giving by correspondent Jefferson Gill.
Having undergone the mental thrashing of the 50th anniversary speech by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, in which he said: “There are no miracles workers nor miracles . . .” (I am living testimony of a miracle, being healed of various physical, emotional situations and my eyesight being restored at age 60; I have no need for spectacles) I cannot allow Gill to escape scrutiny in his letter of November 30 in the MIDWEEK NATION.
He claims that tithing is only for those under the law of Moses. I agree with that but he failed to explain that under grace (2 Corinthians: 8) we as believers in God have moved to a higher level, that of the grace of giving (2 Corinthians 8:7).
Regarding “this grace of giving”, Paul exhorts us to excel in this area.
We are to give “according to our means” (verse 11), and to give out of “the sincerity of our love” (verse 8).
This grace of giving is comparable to Christ’s love in descending to poverty, though rich, so that we “might become rich” (verse 9).
We are to give not just a tithe, but offerings as well, which is more acceptable. Giving helps those who do not have. Verse 14 reminds us that our “plenty will supply what they need”.
There are businessmen who, even though they’re not Christians, give a tenth of their profits or earnings to the church. One such local gave a church a new building and tithes out of his business. And his business continues to prosper.
So, Mr Gill, please study the Word carefully and do not spout erroneous doctrine. Do your research first.
