AFTER FOUR of the seven rounds in the Barbados Under-20 national chess championship, one player leads with a maximum of four points from as many games. It is the number one seed in the tournament, Bryan Prescod, of the University of the West Indies.
Prescod can consider himself a little fortunate to have won all of his games so far, as in at least two of them, he found himself under severe pressure, and only with a little luck was able to convert the full point.
In round two, Under-14 champion Kyle Sandiford, of Harrison College, had a clear plus in terms of time and material but inexplicably walked his king into a mating net. Then in round four, Prescod was against the ropes against Renaldo Rochester, but Rochester did not manage his time properly and eventually Precod was able to turn it around and come away with a victory in that game.
Rochester leads a group of four players tied in second on three points. These also include Justin Parsons, current Under-16 and Rapid champion Nitin Mahtani and Rashad Gibson, of The Lodge School. (PR)
