Soft drinks ‘too sweet’

SOFT DRINKS MANUFACTURED in Barbados have been found to carry alarmingly high levels of refined sugar, which present a clear and present danger to the health of the country, a recent survey undertaken by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition has revealed.

Sir Trevor Hassell believes soft drink makers should at least halve the level of sugar in their products at the earliest opportunity, after a recent survey showed that a single soft drink made here, in many instances, contains the equivalent of nearly ten tablespoons of sugar, when the total added sugar intake for children should not exceed five teaspoons per day. (BA)
