Show jumpers face off

LOCAL show jumping horses were put to the test in a recent two-day competition between Canada and Barbados. 

The 11 Canadian show jumpers were led by coach Suzi Niles, of team Iron Horse Equestrian Complex of Ontario, at Big C Stables in Frere Pilgrim, Christ Church in the first event here of the year. It was sponsored by Nissan and Hyundai. 

In the first night’s competition of power and speed, local favourite Helena Povey was unable to compete due to flu. But crowd-pleaser Slade Jones, aboard his chestnut Ole, managed to keep the Barbados flag flying. 

Jones rode a corking clear round in a time of 16.32 seconds, just edging out Gracie Phillips of Canada who took second place in a time of 16.41 seconds. Andrew Christie, the lone male for the Iron Horse team, was third aboard Lucky Luke in a time of 18.84 seconds. (RA)
