Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. – Albert Einstein (1879-1955), German-born physicist.
SOMETHING SEEMS PECULIAR with the mindset of particular groups across the various social classes in Barbados.
For the past 60 years electors have chosen either the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) or the Democratic Labour Party (DLP).
No other political party has ever held the reins of power even though it is often said that there is no fundamental difference in the philosophy of the two major parties.
In a society where the citizenry is constantly encouraged and reminded to embrace change, and where one of the most overworked clichés as espoused by Albert Einstein continues to be repeated ad nauseam, one would think that Barbadians at this juncture of our development would be ready for a third or even fourth political party.
Recycled politicians
What is being said by certain people within the columns of the print media thus far seems to suggest that one party or the other does not have the right mix of people, is made up of recycled politicians, does not have a strong enough personality as leader, cannot enter the political arena and be successful at this 24th hour, is operating on a basis of discrimination and elitism, and other negative comments.
Over the years numerous calls have been made for changes to the political road map and management of our country, yet the electorate has only been able to select the BLP or DLP, resulting in limited radical change across the society.
We continue to do the same thing over and over and continue to get the same results.
If there is any truth in the quotation attributed to Einstein, then there is the likelihood of an undesired pandemic of mental illness in Barbados.
Barbadians need to put a stop to such “to and fro” repetitive action and are reminded that Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said: “The only thing that is constant is change.”
Barbados is at a crossroads and in dire need of meaningful change.
