Morris, Hoyte-Small make mark

AKALYA MORRIS and Antoni Hoyte-Small are the first two athletes to qualify for this year’s CARIFTA Games in Curacao in April.

Competing at the annual Joseph Payne Memorial Classic at the National Stadium yesterday, both achieved the standard set by the Athletics Association of Barbados in the first major athletics meet of the year.

Morris of the High Performance Programme (HPP) leapt the 5.60 metres required to win the women’s long jump, while Quantam Leap’s Hoyte-Small clocked 48.17 in the  400 metres, going under the 48.25 requirement for Under-18 Boys.

That men’s quarter-mile event was won by former Lodge School boy Akeem McCollin in 48.13 seconds. Last year’s double CARIFTA gold medallist Jonathan Jones of Elite Distance was third in 48.46, just outside the 48.25 seconds which is the standard for Under-20 Boys.
