THREE items are down for debate when the Senate meets today at 11 a.m.

Among them is the Minimum Wage Bill, which will repeal the 1955 Wages Council Act, and push Barbados a step further towards a legislated national minimum wage instead of only a few designated sectors being covered as exists.

Senators will also review the Health Services (Amendment) Bill, which provides for the use of electronic smoking devices and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (Membership of Barbados) (Amendment) Bill, which will provide for Government to subscribe shares to the capital stock of the institution, also known as the World Bank, that lends to middle income developing countries, which Barbados joined in September 1974.

However, the major focus is expected to be on the minimum wage measure, which was approved in the House of Assembly on January 17 with mute support from the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to register its concern that there were other more pressing national issues. (AB)
