GOVERNMENT IS MOVING closer to having a more realistic minimum wage set for workers at the lowest end of the scale.
Minister of Labour Esther Byer Suckoo (below) told the Senate yesterday the Minimum Wages Bill which she introduced would establish a minimum wage board whose recommendations to the Minister of Labour would inform what a minimum wage should be.Â
The Bill proposes a nine-member board with three members representing employers, three representing employees and three appointed by the Minister of Labour.
The board will be expected to make recommendations to the minister on the options of either a national minimum wage or a sectorial minimum wage, based on prevailing social and economic conditions, Byer Suckoo advised. (GC)
