ALTAR CALL: ‘Lean on God’ in times of trouble

THE MAN who does not know Jesus will never know what to do when trouble comes.

This was declared by Pastor Glenworth Joseph as he delivered a strong message at the Government Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church during last week’s Sabbath service.

He said such a person would resort to ungoldly measures.

“He will turn to drugs and immorality. He will turn to drinking and gambling, because he does not know better,” he said.

“The Bible makes it clear that calamity can come upon any and every one but the devil makes sure that we [Christians] get double and triple portions. What would be unfortunate is when the Christian behaves like the man in the world when his troubles come.”

His message, themed Jesus The Centre Of It All, examined several portions of Scripture, including Lamentations 3:22,23, Luke 18:35-43, 1 Corinthians 2:7-10 and John 5:5-9. The sermon was also punctuated with singing by Claire Hunte, Anne Allen, Dione Timothy, Leann Lucas and Dale Alleyne.

He said: “For many of us dry weather follows a good life but that is not exactly so. Storms can come while the life is perfect with God. Job knew who he could turn to and we certainly know who we can turn to also. The world we live in is destitute and messed up. The world we live in is crazy. The world we live in is not getting better, so who do we need in these times? Jesus. What do we need in these times? We need the Bible. Who do we need in these times? Our Saviour. He is the only rock upon which we can depend.”

Joseph stressed that the power of Jesus to change situations “is beyond our understanding, but whenever Jesus comes, He makes a difference in our lives”.

The preacher added that the greatest change that could be made was when a person received Jesus and walked in the newness of life.

“There is nothing better than that. So today, regardless of the situation in your life, when Jesus passes by He makes a difference.”

He continued: “How often do we ask for deliverance and receive it? How often do we think we can manage when we reach a certain distance?”

Too many times people disappointed God because they just wanted to do things their way when they wanted, Joseph said.

“Remind yourself that you are finite and God is infinite. Remind yourself that you are dust, you fade and you are short-sighted. The prophecies are there to remind us that there is a God who can see the future; a God who can warn us of things to come. But while the scripture is a sure foundation of God’s ability to see in the future, the Holy Spirit is also there speaking to us on a daily basis. He is the manifestation of the Godhead right now. If He does not speak to us within our hearts, then we are found destitute. We read scripture but it’s the Holy Spirit who guides and keeps us.”

Joseph urged his listeners to stop depending on their own understanding, stop looking through their own eyes and ask God to do the seeing for them.
