DEAR CHRISTINE: Eight years feeling neglected and alone

DEAR CHRISTINE, I AM 30 YEARS OLD and have been in love with a man from the time I was 20. He is 31 years old and I have an eight-year-old child from him.

There is another girl with whom he fell in love when I was pregnant. When the child was two years old, she left the island but came back to visit. My boyfriend slept with her for the time she was here.

After she left he came back to me and I accepted him.

She is back here once more and he is doing the same thing all over again. He takes her everywhere and for the years we’ve been together he has never taken my anywhere.

He told me if he wanted to finish with me he would tell me when that time comes. I know he loves his child and would never do anything to hurt her. On the other hand, he seems very indifferent when it comes to me. I spend time crying and wondering why he would treat me like this.

Please tell me what to do. I cannot eat, sleep and don’t want to do anything. My heart is all broken up and I feel I would kill myself.

Dear YP,

I wish I could help you but the strength to get out of this situation must come from you. You’ve got to let him know that you are not prepared to put up with his attitude any longer and you will not accept his unfaithfulness.

Remember you have a child who needs her mother, so don’t do anything foolish with your life. You simply won’t achieve anything.

If you were not so blinded by love you’d act immediately when you consider the meaning of his words about not being finished with you yet.

You are probably cowering in fear that he will end his relationship with you. Well, you must examine the relationship as it stands and seriously consider whether you should not finish it.

If you cannot make the break then you’ll just have to grin and bear whatever indignities he puts on you.
