OPPOSITION MEMBER OF Parliament for St Joseph Dale Marshall has advised Government to tread cautiously in amending the Barbados Revenue Authority Act.
In the Barbados Revenue Authority (Amendment) Bill 2017 debated in the House yesterday, people who wish to convey property will first have to obtain a tax clearance certificate from the Barbados Revenue Authority as evidence that all taxes have been fully paid, or an agreement must be made with the BRA in which ten per cent of the assessed tax is paid and arrangements made for payment of the balance.
But Marshall expressed strong opposition to the measure, charging that the bill was designed to “get every penny” out of the taxpayer.
He also considered it as a measure to discourage land ownership. (GC)
