RECENTLY WHILE IN Fort Lauderdale, Florida, I paid a visit to one of my contemporaries from Codrington College, who is now 93 years old and in hospital. Before I could see him, I had to first clear security, which was very tight.
I was asked for identification and I gave my Barbados Identification Card to the security officer, who looked at it and gave it back to me and then asked for a driver’s licence, which was accepted.
Then I was processed – which involved being photographed and given a printout with my photo and the patient’s name and room number. As a result, I am now in the system of that hospital. I could have objected, but I wanted to see my classmate, whom I had not seen for 41 years.
It only shows that the law must be followed whether you are a citizen of a country or not. Why then was there that big objection when the Immigration Department wanted to photograph people, including Barbadians, when leaving and re-entering the country?
Let us as a people realise that the security of any country is very vital. Let us all cooperate with those in authority in order to make our country, Barbados, a safe place for all.

Bajan kitchenette
The Holetown Methodist Church will be hosting its annual Bajan Kitchenette during the Holetown Festival tomorrow on the church grounds. On sale will be several Bajan delicacies. The public is invited.

The Moravian Church’s national women’s prayer breakfast takes place tomorrow at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St Michael, at 7:15 a.m.

The Dunscombe Moravian Church, Dunscombe, St Thomas, will hold its harvest on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Toccata in steel
Holetown Harmonites Classical Steel Orchestra presents Toccata In Steel, including works of Mozart, Handel and Bach. Special performance will be by Woodwinds Chamber Ensemble and other surprises under the aegis of the Holetown Festival Committee at the St James Parish Church on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Classical concert
On Sunday, February 26, at St Mary’s Church there will be one service at 8 a.m. followed immediately by the annual parish meeting. At 6 p.m., there will be an Evening Of Classical Music with the Royal Barbados Police Force Band, the St Leonard’s Boys’ Choir and others.
