CANE PROCESSING HAS resumed at Portvale Sugar Factory.
Factory manager Raphael O’Neal said grinding resumed at 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening.
That was one full week after it was reported that issues with the factory’s boilers had caused it to cease production.
During the week since production stopped, canes were still being delivered to the Blowers, St James factory. On Sunday when a MIDWEEK NATION team visited the factory there were piles of cane waiting to be processed.
When contacted to find out how cane producers were impacted by the work stoppage at Portvale, the lone factory processing canes, Patrick Bethell, chairman of the Barbados Sugar Industry Limited said he would have to speak to the farmers to find out. He noted that the farmers harvested canes based on the quotas they received from the factory. (LK)
