CLOSE TO $3 MILLION will be spent upgrading Time Out At The Gap Hotel recently bought by hotelier Bernie Weatherhead’s Sun Group company.

Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy announced Monday that the former Gems Of Barbados hotel had been sold for $7.5 million, as he advised of Government’s intention to get out of the hotel business completely.

Weatherhead told the DAILY NATION he made the decision to purchase the Dover, Christ Church hotel, which he was operating under a 15-year lease, after weighing whether it was better to continue to pay “mega” rent for the 76-room property that was desperately in need of an upgrade, or buying it and investing in its upgrade.

“Last year I told them I cannot run the hotel in the condition that it is in. The hotel has some very basic problems,” he said. (GC)
