STAG BEER is the new sponsor of this year’s Champions Cup staged by the Barbados Football Association (BFA).

The disclosure was made yesterday when the launch of the knockout tournament was held at the association’s office in Wildey.

Stag’s new brand manager Troy Clarke said the agents, Bryden Stokes, were elated to partner with the BFA because of the reach of football.

“We were happy to get a call from the association to partner with them for this year. As you know football is a very popular sport in the community and we are looking forward to being part of that, and we expect this to be a very strong partnership with the BFA,” he said.

BFA general secretary Edwyn Wood was also happy about the new sponsorship.

“It’s great to have Stag on board and we hope to build a strong relationship. As you know, the knockout competition is what the players look forward to most as the lower teams get a chance to have a go at the Premier League sides. There’s always plenty of excitement,” he said.

There are more than 60 teams competing in the competition, with new ones like Martindales Road, Emmerton, Route 16 and St Helens.

The action kicks off on March 6 and some of the intriguing match-ups include St Helens against Police, Blackspurs against Carlton in a Black Rock derby and Soccer Academy facing Route 16. (PR)
