Land plan ‘critical’

PRIME MINISTER Freundel Stuart says tough decisions have to be made about how land is utilised in Barbados.

He said due to a shortage of land in Barbados, much of that which was set aside for agricultural production is being used for other purposes.

In fact, Stuart said while 30 000 acres of land had been identified as the amount necessary for agricultural uses ranging from the sugar cane industry to food crops, cotton, forage and forestry, only 28 000 acres were currently available.

“Over the years, as the country has charted its socio-economic and environmental journey, it has gradually become necessary to utilise thousands of acres of agricultural land to facilitate development. (RB)
