Kellman for more farmers’ markets

MINISTER OF HOUSING and Lands Denis Kellman is concerned about the lack of infrastructure for vendors.

He was speaking yesterday on the last day of Agrofest where he said the Rural Development Commission (RDC) was looking at ways to increase farmers’ markets across the island beyond the annual festival.

“We need to see how we can find a permanent base for them so they can advertise and reduce our import bill . . . . In over the last year or two we have been looking at the possibilities of creating more farmers’ markets with the communities and that is something I think we have to impress on our people to ensure that if the farmers plant, they have somewhere to market their produce,” he said.

Kellman also brought up the Barbados Physical Development Plan, which he said highlighted there was a shortage of land allocated for agricultural purposes. (TG)
