THERE ARE MORE THAN 800 criminal cases to be heard this year, but only two High Court judges assigned to hear them.
Amidst fears of this situation further choking the already slow judicial process, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Charles Leacock QC has suggested Barbados move towards a plea bargaining system to alleviate the problem.
The island’s top prosecutor made the suggestion yesterday after a weekly lunchtime meeting of the Rotary Club of Barbados South at Accra Beach Hotel.
Leacock noted that following the abolition of preliminary inquiries on February 1, cases would be going to the High Court faster than before. (AD)
