JALON SAMUEL is starting to make a move on the leaders.
At just 23 years old, the Brittons Hill resident has already become one of Barbados’ greats, having joined an illustrious group of jockeys with three or more Gold Cup victories after yesterday’s historic ride aboard Dorsett.
With yesterday’s success to add to wins in 2012 and 2016, Samuel has been just the sixth rider to win the southern Caribbean’s biggest race at least thrice, following in the footsteps of the legendary Emile Ramsammy (1985, 87, 88), Venice Richards (1986, 89, 91, 92), Patrick Husbands (1990, 2006, 2010, 2014) Andy Ward (1999, 2008, 2009) and Jono Jones (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003).
“He’s just too good as he does what he does so well. He shouldn’t be here. Jalon should be out there riding Kentucky Derbies and stuff,” said victorious trainer Robert Peirce. (JM)
