Girls ‘must be protected’

SCHOOLGIRLS MUST BE able to use public transportation and not be molested by men, a prosecutor told the court yesterday in a case where a 13-year-old was assaulted.

Principal Crown Counsel Elwood Watts was dealing with the case of 51-year-old Patrick Anderson Brathwaite, of Welches, Christ Church, who had pleaded guilty last year to indecently assaulting the teenager on December 1, 2009. Brathwaite is currently on remand.

According to facts relayed to Justice Jacqueline Cornelius in the No. 5 Supreme Court, the girl, who attended an older secondary school, was sitting on the bus next to Brathwaite when he rested his hand on her thigh and moved it toward her private area.

Watts said females of all ages felt violated in such situations. He said the matter called for a custodial sentence and suggested two to three years in jail. (TKS)
