Metal Option

THE SANITATION SERVICE AUTHORITY (SSA) is urgently moving to stop the indiscriminate dumping of bulky waste like old refrigerators, washing machines and stoves.

It has entered into an arrangement with Scrap Man Metal Recycling Plant in Vaucluse, St Thomas, to compact these items and export them.

Rosalind Knight, SSA general manager, confirmed the development and revealed the programme started last December with the collection of items.

It is now fully operational, with workers stripping down the waste stored at the SSA’s compound next to the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre Inc (SBRC) in Vaucluse, and sending the metal bodies to the nearby Scrap Man facility. (SP)
