GOVERNMENT IS CONTEMPLATING a “comprehensive overhaul” of legislation governing the transportation sector.
Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley told the House of Assembly it would entail changes to the Transport Authority and Road Traffic Acts allowing inspectors to enforce the law in tandem with the Royal Barbados Police Force.
He was speaking yesterday during the Estimates Debate in the Lower House.
Lashley said the system needed to change, including the fact that traffic inspectors now only had powers to report and monitor.
“Our view is that we have now to look at our legislative programmes in terms of bringing . . . proper standards into the public transport system and that will entail a comprehensive overhaul of the legislation, be it the Transport Authority Act and the Road Traffic Act, empowering the transport inspectors and of course working in tandem with the Royal Barbados Police Force,” the St. Philip North MP said.
“They need to be given a system where the personnel have the powers to assist them and also the use of technology so that we can really capitalise on a proper system and when we . . . expand the [public service vehicle] integration process, that we have scheduled service, proper monitoring and proper inspection.” (SC)
